Ms. Hu Yanyan, Director and President of China Guardian
China Guardian Spring Auctions 2021 concluded successfully, with a total turnover of 2.328 billion yuan, an increase of 0.2 percent compared with Autumn Auctions 2020. No one could foresee the close result when about 6,000 lots were for bidding this season. However, if we observe the auction process and results of 6,000 lots in 25 categories, it is not difficult to see that nearly the same total turnover of the two large auctions after half a year does not mean that the market is stable and certain. On the contrary, there is a turbulent undercurrent. China Guardian needs to explore customer needs, clarify trends, be open-minded and supplement energy through careful analysis to meet new challenges and opportunities.
Thanks for the attention and support of our customers and friends from all walks of life, and thanks for the dedication and hard work of our team.

Stellar achievements of the Spring Auctions
Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
Sale total 936 million yuan
In the Spring Auctions 2021, the Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy category ended with a total turnover of 936 million yuan and an average turnover rate of over 90 percent. Half of the 11 sessions that hit the 100 percent turnover rate belonged to this category. Nearly 1,500 works have found new owners in four days of hammering. Collectors have continued their enthusiasm for imperial calligraphy and painting in the Qing Dynasty, Wumen School paintings, letters of famous people in the Ming Dynasty, and stone seals of the late Qing Dynasty. Therefore, Wang Duo’s Calligraphy in Cursive Script, Tang Yin’s Calligraphy in Running Script, Zhao Zhiqian’s Bizarrerie Fishes, and Wen Zhengming’s Calligraphy in Running Script were sold at high prices prices. The sessions Poetry and Fan Paintings from Shiyanzhai Studio and Treasures of Lisongju Collection got a warm response from the market, achieving 100 percent turnover rates, respectively.
Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy kept its high turnover rate as before. Colorful Anthology: Focus on Private Collection(I)and (Ⅱ) received strong support from online and offline bidders. Bai Jiao’s Calligraphy in the Gazing at the Last Century: Paintings and Calligraphy by Celebrated Politicians, Scholars and Artists (II) was sold for a high price of 1.035 million yuan. The deal prices of Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian, Fu Baoshi and Qi Baishi's works in the Grand View: Chinese Paintings Highlight·Modern were sold at similar prices as before. It’s a pity that Li Keran's Long March and Baoshi's Going Home in the Rain failed to conclude the deal.
The turnover of Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy is only 31.35 million yuan, but it is of great significance. It marks that it transformed from a situation that relatively needs the support of collector friends and the promotion of primary market operation into a dynamic platform for free bidding.

General Head of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy Department
Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
For these spring auctions, we have prepared very well. Exhibitions in Nanjing, Shanghai and the preview before the auctions attracted many visitors.
There are four sessions in this category, and two hit the 100 percent turnover rate. Eighty percent of the 460 lots were sold. In the day sale, fan paintings and calligraphy were still preferred by many collectors, as was imperial calligraphy of the Qing Dynasty. Wang Duo’s Calligraphy in Cursive Script, Wang Hui’s Landscape after Hui Chong, Tang Yin’s Calligraphy in Running Script, and Zhao Zhiqian’s Bizarrerie Fishes were sold at high prices.

Modern and Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
This spring, after three days of fierce auctioning, the Modern and Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy sector received a total turnover of more than 650 million yuan in eight sessions, with an average turnover rate of 93 percent. The turnover increased by 20.2 percent year-on-year.
The biggest regret this time is that Li Keran's Long March failed to sell for not reaching the reserve price. But the biggest joy comes from the high turnover rate.
