China Guardian Spring Auctions 2021 is going to kick off on May 14.
Before the auctions, the company will hold exhibitions in Nanjing from April 22 to 24, and in Shanghai from April 29 to 30, respectively.
The Spring Auctions offer more than 6,000 pieces of arts, including categories of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, 20th Century and Contemporary Art, Ceramics and Works of Art, Furniture, Manuscripts by Famous and Important People, Stamps and Covers, Coins, Banknotes, Jewellery and Jadeite, Wine and Tea.
Chinese Painting and Calligraphy
This season, more than 1,100 artworks will be released in the category of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, and they are divided into 8 sessions. Li Keran’s Long March is the most anticipated in the Grand View: Chinese Paintings Highlight·Morden session. The painting was created by Li Keran in 1959 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Inspired by Chairman Mao's poem, the painter shows the Red Army's bravery in it. As for the art master subsection of the Grand View, it will offer 10 rare paintings by Xu Beihong, covering Xu's works in different periods when he was in Chongqing to the South Sea, and outline his spiritual journey and feelings of China.
With the help of collectors, it is a great honor to launch four private collection sessions. They are Gazing at the Last Century: Paintings and Calligraphy by Celebrated Politicians, Scholars and Artists(II), Painting Collection from the Zhu Moxuan Studio, Kindness between Confidants: The Collection of Wang Zhaoxiang and Jiang Cheng, and Gao Peiming’s Collection, and Kindness between Confi dants: The Collection of Wang Zhaoxiang and Jiang Cheng. Due to its rich sources, the permanent session Colorful Anthology: Focus on Private Collection will be divided into two auctions. The session Contemporary Chinese Paintings will stick to present the diversified features of contemporary paintings.

There will be four sessions under the Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy category, with 390 lots in total. The Grand View: Chinese Paintings Highlight·Classical session offers over 20 precious artworks, including Xu Wei’s Ink Flowers, Wang Duo’s Calligraphy in Cursive Script, Tang Yin’s Calligraphy in Long Scroll, Wen Zhengming’s Poems of Nostalgia, Wang Lishi and Liu Jiyi ‘s Calligraphy to Calligrapher Chen Zhi in the Yuan Dynasty, and Sheng Mao’s Riding in the Mountain in Spring in the Yuan Dynasty.
The session Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, the first auction of this season, offers paintings, fan paintings, letters of famous people, and calligraphy from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with over 300 lots in total. A group of Royal calligraphy in the Qing Dynasty is the highlight of the session. Session Treasures of Lisongju Collection gathers collections by the couple of Wang Shixiang and Yuan Quanyou. Session Poetry and Fan Paintings from Shiyanzhai Studio offers many letters by famous people, like Zhu Zhishan, Dong Qichang, Chen Jiru, and Tu Long.

20th Century and Contemporary Art
The 20th century and Contemporary Art Department of China Guardian offers the Western contemporary art master Gerhard Richter's 7-screen blockbuster Column, leading the Spring Auctions 2021. The work, created in 1968, composed of seven couplets with a size of 205 × 700cm, is one of the most important works of Richter in the world.
This season, the department prepares six sessions, and will auction the lots for the whole day for the first time. There are more than 400 lots, which deeply present the feature of modernist art of the 20th century and Chinese contemporary art.
There is also a promotion exhibition of Impressionist masters this season, which shows four artworks by Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissarro from the second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century. Among them, Monet's masterpiece Les Arceaux de roses, Giverny depicts the theme of water lilies with superb techniques and romantic colors. From the 1980s to the 1970s, this work has been continuously exhibited in nearly 10 important individual exhibitions in Paris and New York, and has many publishing records.

Ceramics and Works of Art
In the Spring Auctions 2021, Ceramics and Works of Art Department will launch 9 sessions, covering more than 900 pieces of porcelain, jade, works of art, Buddha, and Zisha pottery. The porcelain part grandly launched four night sessions, including more than 140 pieces of porcelain and antique treasures, which fully demonstrated the peak skills and quality of imperial porcelain in the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the session Selected Ceramics and Works of Art, there is a subsection of copper stove auctioned at night. It contains 29 pieces of copper stoves collected by Liu Xirong, the owner of Rongzhai Studio. Two sessions of Buddha offers nearly 80 pieces of Buddha statues, the extremely rare bronze and gold-plated A Gun Jam of Nanhai (Avalokiteshvara of Southern Sea) in 1435. In addition, there are more than 260 pieces of Zisha pottery in the two sessions Collection of Yixing Zisha Pottery by Ming Pin Zhai and 400 Years of Yixing Zisha Pottery, which are very attractive.

Classical Furniture and Works of Art
There will be six sessions under the category of Classical Furniture and Works of Art, with over 400 lots in total, including furniture, national stone and seal cutting, guqin, and antique carpets. The session Graceful Companions Fine Classic Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties contains furniture that was mainly made of Huanghuali wood, red sandalwood, and other valuable wood. There are more than 50 pieces of furniture and scholar’s studio objects. A Huanghuali drawing table of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties from the Liuyuzhai Studio is a representative piece of large furniture.
In the session Memories of the Past: Scholar’s Studio Objects, more than 20 lots from Wang Shixiang’s collection will meet with the buyers at the auction. Other treasures under the furniture category are also worth expecting, such as “Dancing Lama Tapestry in Tibetan Buddhism” in the 19th century, “Shoushan Furong stone seal” carved by Wu Changshuo, and “Gu Yu Nan Feng guqin” in the Song Dynasty.

The Rare Books, Rubbing & Manuscripts Department carefully prepares two sessions, Letters and Manuscripts and Rare Books & Rubbing Books, in the Spring Auctions 2021, selecting more than 500 lots.
Rare Books & Rubbing Books session includes the Buddhist classic scriptures from the Tang to Qing dynasties. Among them, Vajra Cchedikā Praj?ā Pāramitā, wrote by the Rong Concubine of Ming Shen Zong (the 13th emperor of the Ming Dynasty) is the most anticipated. The imperial books and prints in the Qing Dynasty are also very popular. The Victory of Suppressing the Rebellion in Southern Xinjiang in the Daoguang Period of the Qing Dynasty is a fine work of imperial copperplate paintings. As for the rubbing books, it is also a collection of fine works. For example, Mo Youzhi’s Shi Qi Tie is a masterpiece.
Letters and Manuscripts session includes letters and manuscripts of scholars, such as Xiong Shili’s Letters, collected by Xu Fuguan, one of the great masters of the new Confucian School; The owner of Chunzhai Studio Yan Qun’s collections; Scholars’ letters in the Ming Dynasty, collected by Xu Shennong; and Gao Zu, Ma Zonghuo’s collections.
