Zhang Daqian's "Aachensee Lake" sold for RMB 100.8 million
2013-12-13

Zhang Daqian's "Aachensee Lake" sold for RMB 100.8 million ($14.76 million) in China Guardian 2010 Spring Auction––setting a new record for the artist

After 60 rounds of intense bidding on the evening of May 17 at China Guardian 2010 Spring Auction, Zhang Daqian’s large splash-ink color-wash landscape painted in his later years “Aachensee Lake” sold for a staggering RMB 100.8 million ($14.76 million). This is the first time a work of modern Chinese painting soared past the RMB 100 million milestone. It also creates a new record for an individual work by the 20th century master, Zhang Daqian.

According to the General Manager of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Chinese painting and calligraphy of China Guardian, Ms. Guo Tong, "This is the first time Zhang Daqian's masterpiece––a groundbreaking work that embodies the meaning of ‘modern’ in Chinese ink painting––has come to auction. As soon as it appeared, it attracted much attention among collectors here and abroad. During the auction, ten or more buyers on the floor and on the phones participated in highly competitive bidding. Buyers were not only attracted to the beauty of this fine work of art, but also its market value. Zhang Daqian's painting induced the market to experience the full impact of modern Chinese ink painting for the first time––confirmed by the top market price for this charming landscape. During China Guardian auction last autumn, classical Chinese painting and calligraphy took center stage. Now, for the first time, a work of modern Chinese painting has exceeded RMB 100 million, a new milestone in the market, taking the market for modern and contemporary Chinese painting and calligraphy to a new level. This new record emerged from China Guardian 2010 Spring Auction and confirms the appeal and strength of the China Guardian brand in the art market.”

Zhang Daqian's huge splash-ink color-wash landscape on silk, "Aachensee Lake," (76.2 cm by 264.2 cm) depicts a distant view of a Swiss lake in 1968. Painted the same year as another masterpiece, "Ten Thousand Li on the Yangzi River," "Aachensee Lake" is the most brilliant and the largest work in the series. The Swiss landscape was exhibited at well-known galleries in New York, Boston, and Chicago during the 1960s and included in a large-scale exhibition of modern Chinese art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2003 entitled "Between Two Cultures." Within art history circles, "Aachensee Lake" is considered to be Zhang Daqian's greatest splash-ink color-wash landscape painting.
