Travelling Exhibition Offers Look inside Wang Shixiang
2013-10-12

An exhibition devoted to the autumn auctions, which will run from November 16 to November 20 in Beijing, opened on October 12 in Shanghai, and will next head to Guangzhou and Xiamen.

The two-day Shanghai event features 200 items, ranging from Chinese oil paintings and sculptures, porcelain and furniture to watches and jewelry.

The exhibition devotes significant space to works done or collected by the leading Chinese art collector Wang Shixiang, which may reignite a new wave of interest in the established collector.

Wang, born in 1914, was a distinguished scholar known for his in-depth research of Chinese tradition and notably, ancient crafts. During the 2003 fall season, China Guardian offered works collected by Wang and his wife Yuan Quanyou. The lots sold out, achieving an exciting 69 million yuan.

Wang Shixiang's Huanghuali table

One of the highlights of the auction is a Huanghuali table, which was transformed by Wang to help his wife learn guqin. He turned a painting table into what it is, following the ancient tradition where a teacher and student would sit across a table, and watch each other’s playing.

Wang was fond of pigeons, crickets, goldfish and gourds. Some gourds recorded in his publications will appear in the exhibition. Small yet exquisite, these gadgets serve as a witness to the storied life of the collector.

In 1949, Wang graduated from the then Yanjing University. His thesis, Research of Chinese Paintings, based on papers that examined Chinese paintings, documents the history of Chinese painting spanning from the Qin Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, and more important, expounds on the principles, techniques and judgment of traditional paintings.

A rare Ming-style blue and white doucai 'dragon' jar and cover

In addition to the collections of Wang Shixiang, other highlights from the exhibit include a rare Ming-style blue and white doucai 'dragon' jar and cover. Made during the Qing Dynasty, it was modeled after pieces from the official kiln in Jingde County, Jiangxi province. The nicely crafted item has been collected by N.H.P. Huth, W.W.Winkworth and Hugh Moss, and was put on sale at Sotheby's in London during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Also on view is a bamboo scroll-shaped brush pot marked "rong yuan”, a zitan hanging panel with precious inlay, and a square seal made from Shoushan tianhuang stone with a Taishi shaoshi knob.

As for contemporary works, about 40 Chinese oil paintings and sculptures will be exhibited during the two-day event, including Schudy’s Wild Chrysanthemums, Zhou Bichu’s A Young Girl’s Portrait, and Jin Shangyi’s Tajik.
